Easy Piano Music
For me, learning to play an instrument was both a way to relax and a way to achieve that great sense of accomplishment that comes from mastering something that (in my case) few of my friends could do.
I had piano lessons from a very early age and it's essential to have proper instruction from the very beginning, whether you're playing an acoustic or electric piano. It's true to say that while the piano is a fantastic instrument favoured by many composers, it is also one of the most difficult to master completely.
The method of piano instruction is vital. The piano itself isn't the problem. With the right guidance it should be relatively straightforward to learn.
My piano tutor used to whack me on the back of my hand with a ruler if I didn't have the correct hand position. Thankfully, this can't happen with online piano lessons!
Too many teachers and too many piano courses give beginners too much information. You don't actually want loads of information packed into a half hour lesson - you won't remember it all and will probably begin to dislike your tuition. An easy piano lesson (with easy piano music), is vital for at least the first few dozen lessons.
It's true that learning a little background information about the pieces you're playing, music theory, etc, will help you to become a more rounded player/musician, but it should be dished out in small chunks so that you digest this knowledge more easily. Too much information and you're going to struggle and possibly resent the effort needed to master the piano.
Easy piano music is essential and you will have to roll your sleeves up and start playing from the outset, rather than reading about how to do it. Nothing beats 'hands on' experience. Don't try to jump the gun: beginner's piano lessons demand beginner's piano music. You're not going to be hitting a Chopin Mazurka for quite some time!
The Rocket Piano course is written for the brand new pianoforte student, but it's also suitable for the advanced piano player. I like the drive and enthusiasm behind the instruction. Ruth Searle knows her stuff and manages to convey her great love for the instrument.
Whatever piano course you go for, make sure that you can work at your own pace and skill level. If you need extra time to master a technique, you absolutely MUST have the facility to do this. This is going to be a major lifetime goal so you might as well enjoy it and be comfortable with the training techniques.
Video, games and written materials make the Rocket Piano course quite interactive and although it's not as efficient as a top-notch piano teacher, it gets the job done without you having to drag yourself along to your tutor's house every week (I know because I've been there and got the T-shirt!).
The nice thing is, once you've mastered a few easy piano tunes, it's time to show off to friends and family (don't pretend that's NOT important to you!).
